Epub Editing Software

If you’re like me, you write ebooks. Or maybe the term “ebook” doesn’t mean much to you yet. In any case, you need to know about editing software for ebooks—specifically what I’ve found to be the best of its kind: Sigil.

Sigil

Sigil is an ePub editor that can be used to edit and add features to your eBooks. It’s a free, open source program that’s available for Mac, Windows and Linux users. This means you can use Sigil with any operating system you like without having to pay for software or worry about compatibility issues. In addition to being free and open source, Sigil boasts a large community of users who share tips and tricks online if you ever have trouble getting started with the program.

Calibre

Calibre is a free and open source e-book computer software application suite which organizes, syncs, and helps you manage eBooks, audiobooks, music, and video. It’s also a pretty cool ebook editor that supports epub format.

As an ebook editor, Calibre can do:

  • Edit metadata (title, author name) of your ebooks
  • Convert an existing format to another one (for example MOBI to EPUB)

Scrivener

Scrivener is a writing software which helps you to organize your research, drafts and final copy. It has many features that can help you to write your book. You can use it on Windows, Mac and Linux.

You can save the files in formats such as epub or pdf. The editing tools are very useful for formatting the text and making sure it looks good on all devices.

The software also has a comprehensive dictionary with definitions in English, French, Spanish and German so that you don’t have to look them up anywhere else while writing your book!

Vellum

If you’re a Mac user and are looking for an easy-to-use ebook editor, Vellum is a great choice. It’s designed for people who write books as opposed to marketers, so it comes with a clean interface that makes it simple to work on your manuscript. Vellum also has a good set of tools for editing your ebook—it can help you add images, create tables of contents, and format in styles that match major publishing houses.

epub cover editor

EPUB and MOBI are the most common formats for reading eBooks on eReader devices and tablets. Apple’s iBooks, Barnes & Noble’s Nook, Adobe Digital Editions, and Aldiko on Android all support EPUB. Amazon’s Kindle uses MOBI, a software package created by the French company Mobipocket, which was bought by Amazon in 2005. MOBI eBook files usually have the .prc or .mobi extension.

The advantage of EPUB and MOBI is that both formats display reflowable content (the text adjusts to fit the size of the screen on your reading device) as well as fixed-width layout. Both formats are also open standard, which means that they are free and publicly available, although rules exist regarding their usage.

EPUB and MOBI files can be edited using a number of eBook editing tools. MOBI should first be converted to EPUB, after which the file can then be edited using one of the tools described in this guide. A variety of MOBI to EPUB conversion tools are freely available online. CNET.com lists many of these tools with crowdsourced reviews.

Editing an EPUB

An EPUB is essentially a ZIP file containing nested folders with XHTML text, images, Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), embedded fonts, and metadata files. Almost anyone can edit EPUB files with the help of an eBook editing tool, although some familiarity with hypertext markup language (HTML) is helpful.

Sigil and calibre are open source software applications that can be downloaded freely from the Web. Both are maintained by volunteer developers, which means that user support is limited. The user instructions provided below are very basic. The best source for help is usually one of the online forums where users exchange information and answer questions.

how to edit a epub file

There are several great programs available to help you design a high quality cover image for your ebook. Programs like Photoshop are great, but you don’t need any expensive design programs to make a great ebook cover. There are lots of free design tools available. Here is one of our favorites. Its called CANVA, its easy to use and its totally free.

2. Click “Create a Design”

3. Then choose the “Kindle Cover” option under “Blogging & eBooks”. You can also choose “eBook” either of these options will produce a high quality image perfectly sized for your ebook, but the Kindle option has more free layouts to choose from. The 1410px by 2250px image will be just the right dimensions for your Kindle and most other ebook devices.

4. Select one of the free design options (there are also paid options. but the free layouts are great, and you can use the paid layouts for inspiration when you customize your own cover!)

5. Use the editing features to customize the images and text on your cover. If you want to add an image to your cover (maybe as the background) check out Pexels.com Its a great place to find images that are 100% free to use.

6. When you are done, simply click the “Download” button to produce a high quality PNG or JPG image for uploading to Amazon and Apple.

NOTE* You can actually use Canva to create an entire PDF ebook. But keep in mind, this is NOT the same thing as an epub ebook. Epub is an ebook format that can be sold on Apple, Amazon and other ebook stores, and a PDF is not. An ePub (or Mobi) file is also a flowing text format, which means the content will adjust to fit the size of the device. A PDF is non-responsive, and will not change depending on the device size. So PDF files can be very difficult to read on tablets and especially on small devices like an iPhone.
