Find Your Voice

Let’s face it, there are a lot of blogs out there. It’s not hard to get lost in the sea of online writing and content. How can you stand out from the crowd?

  • Create a blog that is unique. Don’t copy other blogs or create something generic just because it looks good on paper. If your blog isn’t actually interesting, why would anyone bother reading it?
  • Find a niche and stick with it! This is an important step in creating a successful blog: finding your voice as an author and honing in on topics that will resonate with readers. For example, if you love being outdoors and camping then write about those experiences!
  • Be yourself! You’re not going to find success by pretending to be somebody else or trying to fit into someone else’s mold—you have to be true to yourself at all times so that others can see who they truly are when they read what you write!

Produce Quality Content

Now that you’ve decided to start a blog, the next step is to produce quality content. This means creating posts that are valuable to your audience. It also means posting regularly and consistently.

When writing blog posts, try to keep things simple and straightforward. Make sure that your writing is easy-to-understand and reader friendly by avoiding jargon or technical terms whenever possible.

Also, don’t forget about images! Images can help attract people who wouldn’t otherwise click through a link but might stop if they see an interesting photo in their news feed or in an email from one of their favorite sites/blogs (i.e., you). If possible, incorporate videos into your blog posts too—not only do these add another dimension of interest but they can also help break up text so readers aren’t overwhelmed by blocks of text which makes long articles more palatable for busy readers who don’t necessarily have time for lengthy reads every day!

Use Social Media Wisely To Grow Your Blog

Social media is an essential part of any blogger’s arsenal these days. The ability to drive traffic to your blog post and get feedback on it is invaluable, but social media can also be used as a way to network with other bloggers and promote your own content.

A great way to use social media for growing your site is by sharing links back to it from other platforms. If you have an Instagram account or a YouTube channel, share posts about your website there as well! If you don’t have those things yet, consider starting one!

Another method for using social media is by commenting on other people’s blogs (and being genuinely interested in what they say). This will help you establish relationships with people who might be interested in what you’re publishing online — which will lead them back here one day when they want more info about whatever topic was referenced earlier.

Network The Right Way

The best way to start your blog is to network with other bloggers.

When you first start blogging, you should aim to network with people in the same niche as you are in. That way, you can all help each other out and build a strong community within your niche.

But don’t stop there! You should also be networking with people who aren’t in your niche but may be interested in it or related niches! For example: if I started writing about fashion and beauty and lifestyle tips for female millennials (like me), then I would want my readership and influence from all around the world! This means that even if someone isn’t actually interested in those topics yet—but they do like them—they’ll still find something useful here on my blog because even though their interests may change over time (like mine did), these topics still apply universally across generations – no matter what genre or demographic group one belongs too (ehem…the reason why I’m calling this “fashion advice” instead of just clothing).

This is perhaps the easiest step. It’s so easy these days to register a domain name and set up a blog. All you need is a bit of help and pointers in the right direction.

Mistakes to avoid when setting up your own blog

As a beginner in blogging, it’s normal to make mistakes. That’s perfectly OK provided that you learn from your mistakes and do not repeat them.

When it comes to starting a blog, have these tips in mind.

Keep your focus on your main goal – make money online.

Your goal is to reach a point where you will start making money from your blog, you should not forget that.

I’m mentioning this again because I know from experience that a common mistake beginners make is spending too much time and effort in designing the ‘perfect blog’, forgetting that at the early stages (when there is no traffic coming in), nobody cares about your website’s design, and that includes Google.

I’m not saying that website design is not important, it is, but not at the early stages. Your primary goal at this step is to have a blog running and start creating content that will get you traffic.

There is so much work involved in getting traffic (and potential customers), and you should devote your energy to those tasks from the very beginning.

You need to have your own domain and self-hosted blog

As you will read in the how to start a website guide, there is a big difference between hosting your website on a free platform like and having your own domain and your own self-hosted website. Starting a blog requires choosing the right hosting solution. Hosting ensures your content is secure and reliable when it reaches your ideal readers.

Make the right decision from the beginning and choose the right platform. By far, a self-hosted WordPress website is your best choice.

If you are starting out now, try to keep everything as simple as possible. Don’t overcomplicate things because you will get lost in the process.

You have a lot to learn and as you go along, you will change your mind about many things, so save your time and energy for the more complicated tasks.

2. Start publishing great content

So, you have a website up and running, that’s great!

Now it’s time to get to one of the most difficult and challenging tasks of blogging, which is no other than creating the actual content for your blog.

Have this in mind

A blog with no content is nothing, a blog with mediocre content is just another blog in the millions of already published blogs, a blog with great content is a money-making business.

Having said that, it is important to understand from the beginning the importance of content for your blog’s success.

Great (good, superb, or fantastic – you choose) content, will get you traffic (we will see below how), credibility, and make you money (in different ways).

So, what is great content?

Great blog content is not necessarily text, it can be images, videos, infographics, or even audio. BUT, for the purpose of achieving high rankings on Google (and other search engines), your content should be primarily text.

As I mentioned above, at the beginning keep it simple. Later on, for the best results, you can combine text with other forms to make your content more interesting.

Great content has the following characteristics:

Don’t worry if the above list doesn’t make a lot of sense for now, as you become more experienced, you will understand it better.

Let’s see how you can practically create good content for your website.

Choose a topic that you enjoy reading/researching/writing

When you start writing content for your blog, you should be in a position to provide content that meets the criteria of good content (as explained above).

If you are not passionate about the topic, this process will be very difficult and you will give up before you even begin.

A money-making blog needs a lot of content and you need to come up with a lot of ideas and topics to cover on a weekly basis (if not daily), so have this in mind when choosing your niche.

Choose a topic with a decent audience

It’s not enough to be passionate about a topic, others should be too.

Remember that in order to make money from your blog, you will need people to buy your products or advertisers to pay money for your ad space.

If your selected topic does not have a decent audience, none of the above will happen.

The easiest way to do a preliminary search as to the potential of your niche is to open Google and search for phrases (keywords), that come to mind.

Look for the number of results and types of websites that appear on the first pages of Google.

Don’t go too broad, make it specific

While you do need a decent audience for your chosen topic, don’t go too broad because chances are that there are already thousands of websites about the same subject.

Popular topics have a bigger audience but they are also very competitive. If you are starting out now as a solo blogger, it would be easier to compete with other bloggers rather than online businesses that have teams of writers and SEOs behind them.

Let me give you an example to make this easier to understand.

Let’s say that you’re passionate about ‘fitness’ and ‘healthy living’. If you do a search on Google for ‘weight loss’ or ‘dieting’, you will get thousands of results, many of them from online magazines or websites that have been established for years, loaded with thousands of content pages.

It’s impossible for a new website to compete with these and get Google traffic for such broad terms.

What you can do instead is to narrow down your topic and go after a specific niche that it’s still related to your passion but with less competition. An example would be “healthy living advice for kids”.

It’s a topic with a lot of interest, mainly from parents who want to learn how to provide a healthy lifestyle for their kids, and they also hold the money to buy a product (maybe an ebook) to help them do so.

This process of finding out what to write in your blog is called keyword research.

3. Build organic traffic to your blog

Let’s recap the process so far.

Your first step is to register your own domain and set up your blog.

Your second step is to decide the topics to cover in your blog and master the keyword research process.

The next step is to start building organic traffic to your blog, and this is what I will discuss in this section.

What is organic traffic?

To make money from your blog, you need organic traffic and not just traffic in general. Organic traffic is generated from search engines (mostly Google).

What makes organic traffic more valuable than any other source of traffic, is the ‘user intent’.

A user that types a query in Google’s search box, has a clear intent. He or she is either looking for an answer to a question, wants to learn something, to find information, or to buy a product.

For example, a user searching for “how to do an SEO audit of my website”, it is clear that he is looking for a step-by-step guide on how to perform an SEO audit.

It is very specific and in order to be eligible to rank for that term (or related), you need to provide Google with a thorough guide on how to perform a manual audit.

When you do this properly, your blog posts will eventually rank high on Google and you will start getting targeted organic traffic to your blog.

11 Tips For New Bloggers: Grow Your Blog

This list includes tips you should be considering all in your first year of blogging.

It may seem like a long list. Despite what many will say, blogging is HARD. Consider all the hats you have to wear as a blogger: content creator, graphic designer, marketer… That’s just a few and there are definitely more!

We’re starting with the most important thing any new blogger should be doing!

1. Going Self-Hosted With WordPress From The Start

One of the most important tips for new bloggers is to go with a self-hosted WordPress blog.

When I mean WordPress, I don’t mean A self-hosted site means you need to make an investment in using a hosting provider.

Although there are many great hosting providers, many new bloggers work with Bluehost. I myself still use it as its suits my needs and is at a reasonable price point (I’m using the Choice Plus package) – even after the initial first-year discount.

Bluehost’s customer service has rarely let me down, which is very important to keep my site running smoothly.

Another fantastic option for hosting is NameHero. If you don’t plan to move and upgrade your hosting over time (which can be a hassle), this is the best option. Fast servers, great customer service and everything you need to be blogging like a pro.

Going self-hosted opens up so many new opportunities:

There’s so much more you can do with your own site. Don’t hold yourself back by thinking of the money you need to pay for self-hosting as well as a custom domain.

There will be ways to recoup this investment with some smart monetization activities that I’ll share in a moment.

2. Blogging Legally

If you’re thinking blogging legally means making sure you credit photographers and others when you quote them, you’re only scratching the surface.

Every website needs key legal pages. For blogs you need a:

These three key legal pages protect you and your blog from potential lawsuits and fines and ensure that the reader understands what they can and can’t do with your content.

I made the mistake of not having proper legal pages on my Suburban Tourist site for several years, even after I went self-hosted. I pulled together a Privacy Policy from a free template, but I knew that it didn’t fully protect me.

So, I made the smartest move I could do. I got customizable templates, crafted by a lawyer who’s also a blogger.

I highly recommend you get at least the Legal Bundle from Amira Irfan at A Self Guru. It’s a bundled pack of templates (they work also for Canada and elsewhere) with the key three legal pages, as well as nine bonuses. It’s perfect for those just starting a blog.

At the end of the day, if you’re blogging legally, you’re sleeping easier, knowing you’re not breaking any laws, and you’re covering yourself legally and financially. It’s a one-time investment that can save you potentially thousands of dollars if something goes wrong. The bonus part: you can use the templates on any sites you own.

3. Focusing On One Broad Niche

If you’re like me, and you have many interests that you’d love to write about, you’re in trouble.

I started Suburban Tourist as a travel and outdoor activities blog. It transformed into a lifestyle/parenting/beauty blog when my son was born. I re-branded it once again and it’s now a general lifestyle blog for Millennial and Gen-x women that focus on relevant topics.

What I should have originally done was think about focusing on a specific niche. Think Food & Drink for Millennials. Or Parenting Tips For Busy Professionals. Budget-friendly DIY & crafts.

Readers don’t want to be confused as to what your blog is about. They want to read blogs on topics that interest them. You’ll lose followers and email subscribers if you bounce around from different topics that aren’t closely related.

The only way you can get away with a broader “lifestyle” niche is if you’re focusing on what are the common interests of your key reader avatar. So, if your target audience is Millennial moms, writing on a variety of niche topics that are of interest to them is doable.

They need to solve a problem for them – like making it easier, or faster. More convenient For example, self-care for busy working moms. Skincare tips when you have 5 minutes to spare. You’re a mom blog, but you’re focused specifically on a type of mom.

So think carefully about what your blog niche will be, and who you want to reach with your posts.

4. Creating A Content Plan

Another one of my key new blogger tips is to get organized with a content plan.

Even if it’s a broad monthly list of topics you’ll be focusing on, a content plan (also called a blog editorial plan) can help you keep your momentum going. You’ll avoid getting discouraged with “blogger’s block” when fresh ideas are hard to find.

No need to search for blog post ideas, because you’ve already planned them out!

I’ve shared tips on how to create a blog editorial calendar, using different types of content throughout the year. It’s a good starting point in planning your blog post topics.

5. Learning And Using Good SEO Practices

Of the blogging tips for new bloggers, focusing on on-page SEO is one of the most important.

One of the biggest mistakes I made when I started blogging with Suburban Tourist was not to pay attention to keywords.

In 2010, SEO was still a fairly new concept, but the use of keywords in blog posts was already something that professional bloggers were including in their content development.

When I DID start using SEO and keywords in my blog posts, my monthly blog traffic multiplied quickly!

Using good on-page SEO practices when you start your blog means you’ll start getting organic traffic faster. It takes several weeks to several months before your blog posts start appearing in Google searches for your given keywords.

6. Using Pinterest To Promote Blog Posts

Many veteran bloggers will share this one important new blogger tip: start using Pinterest early on!

Like Google and other search engines, the Pinterest platform is not a social media network (although it’s trying to be one). Pinterest is a visual search engine – or as I like to call it, a “visual discovery engine”. You discover ideas, inspiration and solutions to any given question.

Also like other search engines, getting your pins found on Pinterest takes time and effort. Not all pin ends up being added to searches, so it’s a consistent pinning game that you just need to make part of your weekly activities.

The good news: Pinterest is asking you to not pin as much anymore as before. The bad news: Pinterest wants fresh pins, instead of re-pinning your existing pins daily.

This means you should be creating new pins for about 5 of your blog posts every day, and pinning them to your relevant Pinterest boards.

7. Leveraging Facebook Groups To Grow Your Blog

In the beginning, your blog traffic will grow slowly. There will be times when you feel like nothing is happening.

However, you can boost your blog’s visibility and clicks to posts by leveraging Facebook groups. There are groups for bloggers, who support other bloggers through various promotion activities. There are others that are for specific niches. Some of the niche topic ones permit you to share your blog post, as long as it’s not you promoting something for sale, etc.

Tap into the power of Facebook groups early on, to get a boost in traffic, and also to learn new things from others. Many of the blogger groups are run by veteran bloggers like myself. We share tips and solutions that can help you get ahead with your blog.

8. Monetizing From The Start

One of my biggest mistakes as a new blogger was not thinking about monetizing my blog.

I was receiving requests to write articles and sponsored posts, as it was a very popular activity 8 to 10 years ago. It’s less popular now, but still something many bloggers can do to monetize their sites. Y

However, aside from Google ads, I didn’t tap into things such as affiliate marketing and selling my own services and products until the last few years.

Having a money mindset from the start is a mistake.

There are three great ways for new bloggers to start making money with their sites. Affiliate marketing is probably the easiest to get started with, and you should AT LEAST be doing it, as your blog grows.

If you’ve been blogging for a while and want to transform your blog into an online business you can do this too! It’s never too late to make it into your part-time or full-time job.

When we create our website or blog it is easy to overlook the steps we need to take to make our site legally compliant. It’s easy to think that we don’t need certain legal documents for our site, especially if we have a basic site and don’t even have an email sign up. However, your website definitely does track information about your visitors and it is your responsibility to let them know how you are tracking that information and where you are storing it.

It protects your website from legal issues. You are at risk of getting fined if you do not have the proper measures in place. Anywhere from a few thousands of dollars to millions! Your visitors have the right to report you for violating their rights and you are liable for a lawsuit.

It establishes trust with your audience: your visitors are aware more than ever that their personal data is protected and that they need to give consent.

Your business will appear more professional and legit

You may think “But, I don’t even have an email list so I don’t need a privacy policy, do I?”. Actually you do. Email lists are not the only way that you are storing information about your website visitors.

Virtually all websites use cookies so this will apply to your website!

Terms and Conditions for a website are rules which your visitors are asked to agree to in order to use your website. These rules protect you legally for technical problems and errors with your website, especially ones out of your control .
