How to start affiliate marketing with amazon for beginners

Do you want to get into affiliate marketing but don’t know where to start? Joining affiliate programs is one of the easiest ways to make money as a content creator. However, scouting out the right programs for your audience can be challenging.

One of the best options to consider is Amazon Associates. Whatever your niche might be, there are several ways you can incorporate Amazon products into your content. For instance, you can create gift guides, write product reviews, or put together product lists such as recommended books or top outdoor gear.

In this post, we’ll look at the benefits of joining Amazon Associates. Then we’ll show you how to become an affiliate, from setting up your account to generating links for your favorite products. Let’s get started!

Why You Might Want to Become an Amazon Affiliate

As an Amazon Associates affiliate, you earn a commission every time someone makes a purchase through an affiliate link in your content. This means you can make a passive income simply by promoting products that are sold on Amazon.

There are other reasons you may want to consider signing up for Amazon Associates:

  • It’s free and easy to join. You don’t have to pay a membership fee or meet specific requirements to be accepted.
  • It is home to millions of products. You’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to curating items for your audience.
  • It offers several options for displaying products. You can generate customized links and widgets for the products you want to promote.

Next, we’ll show you how to become an Amazon affiliate, so you can start earning money by recommending relevant offerings to your audience.

How to Become an Amazon Affiliate (In 5 Steps)

Before applying to Amazon’s affiliate program, you need to have a live website. If you’ve just launched a blog, you might want to publish some original posts before submitting your application.

Having an active site increases your chances of getting accepted. You can also set up an Amazon affiliate account for your YouTube channel or mobile app.

Step 1: Sign Up for the Amazon Affiliate Program

Start by heading to the Amazon Associates home page. Select your language and location from the top menu, and then click the yellow Sign Up button in the header.

The next page will ask you to sign in with an existing Amazon account. If you don’t have one, click on the Create your Amazon account button and you’ll be taken to a registration page:

Once you’ve set up your account, return to the Amazon Associates homepage and sign in with your details. Then, you can start filling out the application for the affiliate program.

Step 2: Enter Your Personal Details and Website Address

Next, let’s go through the application step-by-step. On the first page, Account Information, you’ll be asked to provide and confirm your personal details, primarily your name, address, and mobile phone number.

At the bottom of the page, select the main contact for the account you’re creating. You can choose yourself as the payee by checking The payee listed above option. Alternatively, you can add another contact by selecting the second option.

When you’re done, hit Next to move on to Website and Mobile App List:

Here, you can add the web addresses where you plan to promote Amazon products. This can include websites, blogs, YouTube channels, and mobile apps.

Step 3: Build Your Profile

The Profile page will ask you to provide some information about your website(s) or mobile app(s). Start by setting your Associates ID. You can use your name or your website’s name for this. Note that the ID will also appear in your affiliate links.

Next, write a few sentences explaining what your website is about. From the lists provided, choose the topics that best describe your website, pick the kind of Amazon products you plan to promote, and select the type of website(s) or app(s) you own:

In the Traffic & Monetization section of the page, you’ll need to tell Amazon how you’ll drive traffic to your site and how you’ll generate money from your content. Use the lists provided to select the options that apply to your site:

Before clicking on Finish, you might want to read the Associates Program Operating Agreement mentioned in the Contract Terms section.

Step 4: Select Your Payment Preferences

Once you’ve built your profile and hit Finish, you’ll see a page confirming that your application has been submitted. You’ll also find some information about using your Associate ID and navigating the affiliate program.

Amazon will review your application once you’ve made the first sale through your website. If you don’t make at least three sales within the next 180 days, your application will be withdrawn.

This page will also ask you to enter your payment details and tax information, but you can choose to do that later.

Step 5: Start Generating Your Affiliate Links

That’s it – you’re now an Amazon affiliate! Note that Amazon asks you to identify yourself as an Associate and put a disclaimer on your website. You might want to do this right away to avoid getting banned from the affiliate program.

When you’re ready to create your first Amazon affiliate link, head to the Amazon Associates home page. This is where you’ll search for products and track your monthly performance:

Let’s generate the first affiliate link. Navigate to Quick Links: Search for Product, and type the product you’re looking for into the search bar.

Click on Go and you’ll get a list of results. Choose your product and hit the accompanying Get link button:

Next, you’ll see a page with options for displaying the product on your website: Text and ImageText OnlyImage Only, and Add to Widget.

Whatever option you choose, you’ll get an HTML code to add to the page or post where you wish to display the product. If you select Text Only, you can grab a link instead of the code:

If you want to make money by promoting products on your site, you should definitely consider signing up to Amazon Associates. It’s free to join, simple to use, and offers access to millions of products that you can promote through customized links and widgets.

Becoming an Amazon affiliate is a very straightforward process. All you need to do is:

  1. Sign up for the Amazon affiliate program.
  2. Enter your personal details and website address.
  3. Build your profile.
  4. Select your payment preferences.
  5. Start generating your affiliate links.

amazon affiliate program requirements

7 Key Amazon Affiliate Requirements [You Should Know]

The Amazon Affiliate program is one of the largest affiliate programs in the world. If you have a website and you want to monetize it, joining the Amazon Affiliate program should probably be at the top of your list.

Amazon was one of the first companies to introduce the affiliate marketing model, and it completely changed the company’s fortunes, as well as those who joined the program.

For instance, The WireCutter was a prominent digital consumer guide that leveraged the Amazon Affiliates program to achieve fantastic growth. It was bought out by the New York Times for $30 million in 2016!

But to join the program there are strict conditions that you must meet. Here are the key requirements that you must meet to become an Amazon Affiliate.

1. Have an Active Website or Blog, Channel, or App

To become an Amazon Associate, you need to have an online presence. Amazon doesn’t place any restrictions on this, so you can either have an active blog, a website, a YouTube channel, or a mobile app.

If your website or blog already draws in a decent amount of traffic, you’ll find it much easier to start generating commissions quickly.

2. Disclose That You’re an Amazon Associate

Amazon’s affiliate program is known as Amazon Associates. One of the first requirements that you must meet is to prominently place a disclaimer and disclose to your audience that you’re a member of this program.

This is required not just by Amazon Associates, but also by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Since you’ll be promoting products and services from a third party, adding a disclaimer limits your legal responsibility.

It’s an important requirement from Amazon that you let your audience know that you’re an affiliate. Amazon also offers the following disclaimer that you can use:

[Insert site name] is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to [insert applicable site name].

AAWP is a fantastic plugin that lets you easily add a disclaimer to your site. There’s even an option to specify a disclaimer under each product box as well for maximum visibility.

Note: Previously, it was enough to add this disclaimer at the footer of your site, or in the “About Us” section. Today, for better visibility, it’s better if you place it in a prominent location on your site.

Again, it’s not necessary that you use the disclaimer mentioned above. You just need to specify that you earn a commission for any sale through your website.

Our recommendation would be to add that particular disclaimer to the footer of your website and to your official Disclaimer document, and to add another disclaimer in the header that will be displayed just above the blog posts that says something like:

“This post may contain affiliate links — Please read our Disclaimer”.

Adding a brief one-liner at the top, and a more detailed disclaimer at the bottom of your site is a better way to go about it. If you need a simpler way to add a disclaimer, you can use AAWP.

It lets you easily specify a disclaimer on your website, and there’s also the option of adding one under each product box too.

3. Add a Privacy Policy

If you don’t have a privacy policy on your site, your website is already going to suffer in the SERPs. However, if you plan on making it big with Amazon Associates, it’s important that you add a privacy policy to your site.

As mentioned above, it’s important that you outline in your privacy policy how your website follows all laws related to privacy.

When posting your privacy policy, it’s important that you specify the following:

  • The information you’ll be collecting
  • How you collect this information
  • The parties with whom you’ll share this information
  • How you intend to use this information
  • The steps you’ve taken to protect your users’ data

You can either create a privacy policy from the ground up or generate one. There are two options available to you: free and paid.

One of the best choices for generating a privacy policy is to use the Privacy Policy generator from Termageddon. It costs $10/month, but you’ll have an attorney-created, ironclad privacy policy on your website!

Another option is to use a freemium option, like PrivacyPolicies. This requires you to input some information about your website, your email address, and the nature of your website.

Once you enter all the required information, it’ll automatically generate a free hosted privacy policy that you can use on your site. However, for additional clauses or download options, you’ll have to pay a fee to PrivacyPolicies too.

4. Make Your First Sale within Six (06) Months

This is perhaps one of the most important Amazon affiliate requirements that you should know. If you don’t make your first sale within the first six months (180 days), Amazon will reject your application.

This is obviously not a permanent rejection; you can reapply once you start generating enough traffic to your site. Remember: Amazon will only approve your application once you’ve made your first successful sale.

Prior to that, your application will be under “Pending approval.” If you don’t make a sale within this period, Amazon will reject your application, and urge you to reapply later.

5. Requirements for Displaying Prices

There are some guidelines regarding displaying prices on your Amazon store. Ideally, you can’t display pricing information directly on your site.

That’s because prices are liable to change over time. To ensure accuracy when displaying prices for goods, it’s important that you only obtain inventory and pricing using the Product Advertising (PA) API.

The best part about using a plugin such as AAWP is that it automatically fetches accurate prices straight from Amazon, so you never have to worry about a discrepancy. The plugin ensures that all prices remain up to date on your site.

If you’re going to display prices on your site in a comparison format, it’s important that you display the lowest new price, and if there’s a “used” price, you should show that as well.

On the other hand, if you don’t plan on displaying prices, make sure your buttons are simple, like “Check Price” or “Buy Now”.

6. You Can’t Manipulate Cookies

If you don’t want to get instantly barred from the Amazon Affiliates program, avoid using any cookie manipulation software. Amazon offers its own cookies, which you can use to track consumer journeys from your site all the way to Amazon’s website.

7. Only Promote Approved Products (You Can’t Sell Sexually Explicit Products)

approved products promotion guideliness

Amazon strictly prohibits its Associates from promoting obscene, violent, sexually explicit, or discriminatory material on their site if you’ve joined their affiliate program.

More importantly, you should also avoid using any strategies that target children under the age of 13.

amazon affiliate commission rate

Amazon Associates is an affiliate marketing program run by Amazon which allows you to sell its products on your own website in exchange for a cut of the profits. This enables you to boost your product range, test new types of products on your audience or even build a full business around this and perhaps other affiliate programs. For small businesses that currently sell products online, this could represent a great source of added revenue, if you sell additional products through Amazon, without worrying about getting the products yourself. Amazon conducts the sales and ships them directly to the client.

Commission Fee Structure

Amazon operates a volume-based advertising fee structure. The more products that are shipped as a result of your affiliate links, the more you’ll make per sale. Once you have sold enough products to move up to a different advertising rate, all subsequent sales will give you commission at that rate, until and unless you reach the next fee level. Note that some products are exempt from this commission structure.

Commission Fee Schedule

Until 2017, Amazon offered a stepped commission structure so that affiliates who sold a lot of products were paid a higher commission than those who sold little. However, Amazon eliminated this structure and began using flat commission rates for different types of products. While this is likely to continue evolving, examples of the commission structure in 2018 are as follow:

  • 1.0% for video games and game consoles
  • 2.0% for televisions and digital download games
  • 2.5% for computers, computer components, DVD and Blu-Ray
  • 3.0% for toys
  • Amazon tablets and Kindle devices: 4.00%
  • 4.5% for paper books, healthcare, personal care, sports, kitctchen, car and baby products: 4.50%
  • 5.0% for digital music and video downloads; grocery items, handmade items or musical instruments
  • 6.0% for headphones, beauty products, musical instruments, business and industrial supplies
  • 7.0% for clothes and accessories, Amazon TVs, Amazon Echo products and jewelry
  • 8.0% for furniture, lawn and garden, home improvement, pantry and pet products
  • 10.0% for Amazon fashion items and Amazon Coins

Most other categories will earn affiliates a four percent commission, while Amazon gift cards and wine do not pay any commission.

Receiving Payment from Amazon

Amazon will not pay you unless your affiliate sales reach a threshold of $10 if you choose to be paid by direct bank deposit or Amazon gift card, or $100 if you want to be paid by check. If you fail to reach the threshold, your affiliate balance is carried over to the next month and added to the sales you make then. Amazon pays affiliate sales at net 60 days, so, for example, sales that reach the threshold at the end of January will be paid in late March.
